My experience (as a backpacker rather than as a chemist) is that using
household bleach makes the water undrinkable. Outdoor sports stores sell
iodine tablets (under the name Globalene) that we have used for years to
ensure the safety of drinking water. The number of tablets needed depends
on the tablet size, but the normal amount is one tablet to about 2 quarts
of water -- it's labelled on the Globalene container. Boiling the water is
an alternative, but then it tastes really flat.

We used bleach (actually swimming pool disinfectant) to rinse dishes in on
group backpacking trips, but then we rinsed the bleach off with boiled
water.

The amount of Globalene or boiling is usually overkill, because of the
variety of organisms (and of organism resistance to oxidation or high
temperature).
