The chemicals in the suntaning lotion are chemicals that absorb 
the uv light. The light hits the chemical and the chemical changes its
molecular conformation,moves on to another [more excited, yet stable] state,in 
that way the light is stopped by the chemical, but the structiral change of the 
chemical is permanent and stable, that means that you don't have "the way 
back", i.e.the re-emission of the energy from the chemical to the ambient. 
There is not an overly excited state of the atomic structure of the chemical, 
but a stable form of it! Resonance stabilization is the determining principle.

Thats why we use them.
