If the gravity at a singularity is infinite, how can there be an
event horizon after which it is possible to escape its gravity,
i.e. how does the infinite become finite?

I have another question which in a slightly different subject. I
saw a link from one message here into an article that talked
about the information paradox - what would happen if information
was to fall into a black hole. The article mentioned a law of
information coservation in Quantom Mechanics. I'm not sure I
really understand what is the sort of information they mean and
why does that information have to be preserved?
