Dear James,

There are approximately 250,000 species of plants that have been described so far by taxonomists (the people who describe and name new species of plants). New plant species are still being found every year so this number will rise as we explore more areas of the world and describe the new plant species we find. This is one of the reasons why it's so important to conserve habitats, we have no idea what useful and interesting species there are out there that we just haven't found yet.

Regards,

Yvonne Buckley
