There are two basic types of piston-driven internal combustion engine in use
today: the Otto-cycle engine (which is the normal engine we find in cars, and
uses spark plugs) and the diesel engine, which does not use spark plugs.
Both types are named for their inventors: Nikolaus August Otto and Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel. Source: "Internal-Co m bustion Engine," Microsoft® Encarta® 97 Encyclopedia.
