Integrated circuits (IC's), otherwise known as chips, is a large
subject!!
I recommend that you check in your university library under integrated
circuits. There are some books at the high school or lower levels that
give a good explanation of the basic concepts. You could also check the
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) web site. Here
are a few of the many books on this subject (these are all college level):

1) Carver Mead & Lynn Conway, Introduction to VLSI Systems, Addison-
Wesley, 1980, some fabrication and device physics, mostly device and
system design.

2) S.M. Sze, Physics of Semiconductor Devices, second edition, John Wiley
& Sons, 1981.

3) David J. Elliott, Integrated Circuit Fabrication Technology, McGraw-
Hill, 1892, how chips are manufactured.

4)Jacob Millman, Christos Halkias, Integrated Electronics: Analog and
Digital Circuits & Systems, McGraw-Hill, 1972.

5) Arthur Glaser, Gerald Subak-Sharpe, Integrated Circuit Engineering-
Design, Fabrication and Applications, Addison-Wesley, 1977.

6) Paul Horowitz, Winfield Hill, The Art of Electronics, second edition,
Cambridge University Press, 1989.
