Time zones are partly political. It's inconvenient, for example, for half of
Hawaii to be holding Monday while the other half is having Sunday, so the
International Date Line jogs to the west there. Most of the state of Indiana
doesn't have Daylight Savings Time, so (while they are officially on Eastern
Time) they spend half of the year having their clocks agree with Chicago while
the other half of the year they keep time with Cincinnati. The only exceptions
are small regions around Gary (next door to Chicago and on the same schedule)
and the southwest corner around Evansville (also on Central Standard and
Daylight Time).
