Dear Steve,

As you would expect, Hewlett Packard has covered the construction of its ink 
jet cartridges ("pens") with numerous patents. You can have a look at the text 
of these patents by searching the site
www.patents.ibm.com/ibm.html 
using the keywords "Hewlett Packard" AND "ink*". This site is free as long as 
you only want to look at the patents.
HP also has a number of lawsuits going against people who tried to sell 
cartridges resembling the ones they make.
