Grasshoppers are a big group of insects. All grasshoppers are members of the group Orthoptera (a big word for a big group of insects!). Even though there are many different kinds, or species, of grasshoppers in the world, they all make noise kinda the same way.

Entomologists (guys like me who study insects) call the way grasshoppers make noise stridulation. All this means is that the grasshoppers rub two body parts together to make noise. This is kinda like playing a violin: rubbing the bow up and down the strings of the violin makes noise.

Grasshoppers stridulate in different ways. Here are some of the ways grasshoppers make noises:

If you were a grasshopper, you might make noise these ways, but there are also other ways to make noise if you're a grasshopper. Because there are so many different ways for a grasshopper to make noise, there are many different grasshopper sounds.
