Subject: Why do taller things balance easier than shorter things?

For instance, my teacher snapped together 6 markers and balanced them on 
his finger, while he did it with 1 marker, and it fell right away.  I'm 
thinking it has to do with the weight of 6:1 and also that if the taller 
one were about to fall you would have more time to react before it 
actually fell, whereas the shorter one, you would not.  Please help.
