for an explanation of Metal Halide lamp principles.  In fact, this CSW 
site does a good job explaining all kinds of lighting.

A halogen lamp is at heart an incandescent lamp, requiring nothing more 
than a voltage source.  A metal halide lamp is an arc lamp (like your 
household fluorescent), requiring in addition a ballast to initiate and 
control the arc.
