Dear Russel,
I have the answer to the question you submitted. First let me answer
the question of why there is sex? The answer is simply to avoid Extinction
and preserve the species. The main function of organisms is to reproduce.
The Question concerning the lowest form of life having sex is a bit more
complicated. First there are two forms of sex 1.Asexual reproduction(only
one organism is involved) 2.sexual reproduction(two organisms are involved,
normally male.....female). Some organisms can use both. The lowest form
of life having sex would be a certain form of Algae. This type reproduces
using asexual reproduction. I hope I have answered your questions without
any confusion. If you would like more information or detail please feel
free to contact me at Nmorganmary@netscape.net
                                         Thanks,
                                         Morgan Ashworth
