As far as I am aware, the CNS functioning is purely a biochemical events 
which are reflected as action potentials in neurones.
So, on a simplistic note, one could expect some changes in this aspect of 
brain functioning with reference to substance abuse. As for the literature 
on this matter, it is quite vast and is easily available at most internet 
reference sites like PUBMED or Medline.
One that comes to mind is 'E' or Ecstacy which causes depletion or loss of 
serotonergic receptors (responsible for in simple words - sleep).
