Virginia creeper develops tendrils with 5 to 8 branches.  As it grows and 
each of these branches, having adhesive-like tips, will stick to a vertical 
surface allowing the vine to climb.  

Virginia creeper is much better to have climbing on your build ing than 
ivy.  Ivy climbs by having adventicious roots that actually penetrate and 
eventually damage the surfaces it climbs
