MadSci Network: General Biology |
Hi Amy, I'm sorry it took so long for me to reply, this was quite a trying question! In my search for your answer I came across this website : http://www.cbt.virginia.edu/tutorial/OTHERRHYTHMSTIDAL.html and I think it gave us your answer. As you may or may not now our body work around a number of different 'clock' or rhythms, for example the circadian rhythm (you can read about that at that website). It appears that a lot of marine creatures work around a tidal rhythm. This is particularly important in this case because this tidal rhythm provides a lot of changes in the environment different from just daylight, for example, changes in fluctuations in temperature, pressure, food supply, mechanical agitation, and salinity, all of which you wouldn't need eyes to detect!! Hope this helps.. Rochelle.
