Michael, good question. Time zones were assigned with the interests of much lower latitudes (like Colorado) in mind. By convention, researchers and others who visit the North Pole tend to use Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) which is the time recorded at the observatory in Greenwich, England. For more info, you might want to check out the web page for NIST, the agency responsible for standardizing time in the US: http://physics.nist.go v/GenInt/Time/time.html
