Straightening the pipe will surely increase the pressure, but putting a
2 inch pipe will increase the pressure substantially more.

The effect of 90 degree bend is linear on pressure drop whereas effect of
diameter is to the fourth power on pressure, i.e., if the diameter is
doubled, the pressure is affected by factor of 16.  This is given in many
fluid mechanics textbooks.  They can refer to Fluid Mechanics by Frank
White, McGraw-Hill Pub. or Introduction to Food Engineering by Singh and
Heldman, 2nd Ed., Academic Press.
