Alan,
The easiest answer to your question is "practice". If you happen to live in an area, as I do, where tree frogs are common, you can simply scoop them out of your swimming pool. Tree frogs happen to be one of the least aggressive animals with which I have ever dealt. I also happen to have available to me a wonderful book entitled "Reptiles and Amphibians in West Virginia" by Green and Pauley; published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book contains a wealth of information, not only about reptiles and amphibians, but about how to capture and care for them. Among the techneques discribed are pit traps and shaking tree branches. The practice I mentioned involves going out in the field and knowing how and where to find tree frogs in the first place. "Reptiles and Amphibians in West Virginia" is probably not available in book stores in your area. Most states in the US have a similar text available, try your local college or university bookstore. "Reptiles and Amphibians in West Virginia" can be ordered from some of the online book sellers. This is an excellent book for anyone with an interest in herpetology, whether you live in West Virginia or not. Hope this helps, or at least points you in the right direction.
