MadSci Network: Genetics |
My students are studying human genetics and genetic diseases. My question stems from a student asking why two sets of chromosomes are needed. Aside from the obvious problems of recessive disorders what is it about the homologous pair that enables normal protein production to continue. Protein synthesis is decreased perhaps? And then why are plants able to survive with @n or more sets of chromosomes? Is there any advantage and how do they cope with the additional genetic information? Thanks
