MadSci Network: Immunology |
Quentin, Browsing the list of unanswered questions, I found one that, as an immunologist-in-training, I just couldn't resist-yours! I hope the following suggestion is not too late to be helpful. You can imagine that an effective immune system is needed for survival. Sharks are ancient creatures that have been on the earth for 450 million years. They possess a highly effective immune system, and scientists studying shark immunity are learning new things about the human immune system as a result. One of my favorite Scientific American articles addresses just the topic you're looking for and should be easily found at most public libraries. In the November 1996 issue, Gary W. Litman describes his group's research into the similarities and differences between shark and human immunity. The article is well-written with excellent illustrations and sufficient background-I won't spoil the fun or challenge by summarizing it here. Also, the author lists additional resources that should be accessible in either your public library or a local university library. Good luck and don't hesitate to check back with us if you have additional questions! -Tinsley "Sharks and the Origins of Vertebrate Immunity" Gary. W. Litman Scientific American November 1996 pp.67-71
