I know that salt affects freezing and boiling temperatures of water. But what my classroom of 2nd graders wants to know is does salt affect the temperature of water. We have conducted an experiment without much luck. We have placed containers of salt and fresh water in the shade and in the sun. The salt water in the shade was a little cooler (2 degrees) than the fresh water, but the waters in the sun had no change. So basically, we feel our results were inconclusive. Also, both times we have tried this experiment, it has turned out cloudy and cold, so the waters outside in the sun had little chance to warm up. We are studying an ocean unit and could use your help.
