Dear Blancz, Benzodiazepines are a
group of drugs that have a marked effect on the central nervous system.
Clonazepam in particular is an anti-convolsant/anti-epileptic drug.
Patients with breathing disorders should not be subcribed this kind of
drug.
As to side effects, these range from amnesia to drowsyness, ataxia
(impaired gait),urine retention and headaches.

Benzodiazepines have replaced barbiturates and chloral hydrate in the
treatment of CNS disorders because they are just as effective and much
safer in overdose, and thereore withdrawal from the drug effects are not
as pronounced. Patients sometimes suffered bouts of indesision and
forgetfulness with the older style treatments.
