This is only a personal view.

The physical sciences have a social history of their own and I feel that a 
scientist's life and work is greatly enhanced by knowledge of her/his 
science's history.

In regard to society and the world at large,  I think that this is one of 
those questions that is really not worth asking. I don't like the division 
of intellectual activities into "humanities" and "science". Both require 
creative acts and I think the question of whether one can exist without the 
other is a non-question.
