Dear Adrian,

Nobody knows which element was the first to be discovered. Carbon (as charcoal), gold, silver and copper have all been known in their elemental forms since prehistoric times.

For more, see the Virtual Library for History of Science, Technology and Medicine (though many of the links are dead). Or read the excellent book, From Caveman to Chemist by Hugh Salzberg; it should be available in your local library.
