I'm not sure exactly what Alum is but I assume it is some form of natural aluminium salt, probably the sulphate or hydroxide, or a mixture of both. Aluminium salts of all types have been used for deodorants for a long time so I guess it's no suprise it has that effect when applied to the underarm.

As for making a solid stick or cube, I'm not exactly sure what you could add to the raw alum but I looked up a couple of commercial preparations of solid deodorants, just to see what they use to "solidify" their active ingredient.

Most used gycols such as butyl or propyl gycol and then a whole buch of commercial thickeners as well.

One complete ingredient list I found was from a patent for a deodorant, they had the following receipe for a solid stick.

EXAMPLE 5 (Deodorant stick)

This seems to use lots of waxes to solidify the active ingredient.

Well, I hope that gives you some clues about how to try and make your alum in a useful form.
