Len,The effect of the coriolis force is that a hurricane, or other storm system, being carried by winds in the northern hemisphere is deflected to the right of the steering wind direction. If the storm is moving south, or towards the equator (which would be unusual), the storm will be deflected to the right of the direction of motion, which is west, not east. In that case, the storm would be deflected to the west initially, then the deflection would continue until the storm was moving north, then eventually east.
