This is an excellent question, Kristen. The reason lime (calcium oxide, CaO)
absorbs
carbon dioxide is because the reaction forms calcium carbonate (limestone,
CaCO3), which is more stable than lime. Because this reaction is
so favorable, we can remove carbon dioxide from the air in enclosed spaces
like submarines and spaceships.
