    The difficult part of this question has to due to with exactly what you mean by "man".
Modern humans  are placed in the genus Homo and the species sapiens.
The earliest recognized member of the our genus was Homo habilis, which lived about
2.2 million years ago.   They were followed by Homo erectus around 1 million years ago,
and modern humans (Homo sapiens) appeared around 100,000 years ago.
