Hello.
First, microrganisms have nothing to do with the problem. The sugar forms a hyperosmolar solution, much more so than the fluid inside the dental tubles next to the tooth nerve and this causes a rapid movement of fluid, and probably of ions as well, which creates the nerve impulse (Painful!). I cannot give you much more specific information than that since I am not a dentist but the following reference was given to me by Dr. William S. Tener a respected dental friend of mine. The reference is Brannstrom in the Journal of Endodontics #12(10) pp. 453-457, 1986. Hope this useful to you.
