Kangaroos are theorized to have a pouch to limit amount of maternal investment. In a climate where floods and droughts hit unexpectedly, it makes sense not to invest a lot of energy into progeny. By keeping them in a pouch you have an option to get ride of the young. Australia was the backdrop for selection and creation of marsupials. The pouch is created when there is X chromosome to Autosome ratio of 2:1, while a scrotum is created when it is 1:1. See works by Des Cooper or M Renfree. Hope this helps, Patrick
