I checked with the experts in the field of tropical cyclones from the Tropical Prediction Center, NWS Puerto Rico, NWS Guam, and NWS Honolulu. Of those who responded, none of them had heard of this phenomenon, nor could they offer a possible explanation.

My conclusion would be that it is folklore which made for interesting reading, but probably has no truth to it.
