Dear Richard,

Unfortunatly I can not answer your question from any direct experiance, 
however I did pose this question to a proferssor of microbiology. He 
stated that there is no reason to believe phages do not also exist deep 
underground with bactrerial hosts.  In fact this may be an ideal habitat 
as viruses typically are destroyed by UV light generated by the sun.
