I am researching both the introduction of the mongoose to Hawaii and rabbit to 
Australia.  Both deliberate and disasterous (I understand).  I believe that 
the mongoose was introduced in 1883 as a predator for another animal previously 
introduced by man.  However, as one animal was nocturnal and the other 
diurnal this didn't work and the mongoose made inroads on the native species.
