I decided to ask a friend - one of the worlds most eminent Drosophila experts - for
his help. Here is his reply:

Dear year 12 biology student,

In general different species of organisms do not cross or, if they do,
then they produce sterile hybrids. This is true for different species
of fruit fly. If hybrids between two species are produced then they
are, in very general terms, phenotypically intermediate between their
parents, but their sterility precludes, in general, further genetic
analysis.

Year 35 Drosophila worker.
