Subject: Can scientist create atoms or is it impossible to be manmade???

In my science class we are doing the balancing of element formulas and in 
the steps of balancing it said something about not being able to create or 
destroy atoms(or something like that). My Teacher told me to find out if 
scientist could make atoms. I really need an answer in great detail 
explaining its self. Thanks
