Perhaps, a meteorite or some other heavenly body colliding with the Earth?
If the Earth did stop spinning, what would happen? Is there some way we
could then get the Earth to start spinning again? How quickly would the
heat of the Sun become unbearable? A day, a week, a year? On the other
hand, how quickly would the people on the "dark side" of the Earth freeze?
