Early photographic experimentors had access to some fairly refined 
chemicals and photo chemicals.  What were these (silver nitrate comes to 
mind), how were they refined and for what other purposes were they refined 
and manufactured for?  Did the experimentors have to make their chemicals 
from scratch?
