I really don't know why for sure, but I have some suggestions. To 
keep their nails from breaking the record setters sit around all day. 
Other people have to feed them, and I think that their limbs may even 
be strapped down. This is not very healthy and this complete lack of 
exercise may affect nail growth. I think that I have a better answer, 
though. When nails get that long it is very difficult to keep them from 
breaking. They are under a lot of stress because of their weight. They 
may twist under this weight just like other materials do when they are 
overloaded. I think that this is the best answer, but I have one more 
idea. Maybe nails twist somewhat already. They are usually so short 
that we cannot tell. If the nail is just slightly offset it will twist 
eventually. However, I think that I remember seeing nails that were 
extremely curly and that this is unlikely.
