Subject: Why do people put salt on fish to preserve them ?

I know that the fish is preserved by dehydration,but what is the purpose of
adding salt to it?
Does the salt kill bacteria?
Does it speed up osmosis?
Does it lower the melting point?
Please tell me why.Thank you.
