Lindsay,

I am in England, and am not familiar with red-backed salamanders, but I 
sent your question to a friend in Kansas, who is a keen field 
naturalist.   He said he does not think you can sex them in the field, and 
to further complicate matters, there are many subspecies with very 
different appearances.  The only hope is a reference book specific to your 
area.
