The term "herd" refers to "..a group of cattle or other domestic animals of a single kind kept together for a
specific use" ( The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, William Morris, editor, Houghton Mifflin Company,
1982).

So, apparently, the term herd is applied to a group of pigs being raised as domestic animals, either as pets ("The Herd" is the bi-monthly magazine for potbellied and mini-pig information world wide. ) or for pigs raised for meat, analogous to a herd of cattle, or a group of pigs for research ( click here and then scroll down to the article, "Struthers, Inc. Announces Research Sow Herd for Non-Surgical Embryo Transfers and New Artificial Insemination Techniques")
