C-C double bonds and C-C triple bonds react quickly by addition. Ethene removes the colour from bromine water very quickly yet when I bubble ethyne through bromine water, the expected reaction doesn't happen. Any ideas why not? When I make ethyne from calcium carbide and water, and bubble the gas through bromine water, the orange/red colour does not fade quickly, yet when ethene is used, it fades almost quickly. Theory tells me alkynes should undergo addition reactions as quickly as alkenes. What is causing the difference ?
