Damage from high blood pressure to blood vessels in the eyes is likely either if sustained over a long period ( as in hypertension) or if blood vessels are otherwise impaired as for example in diabetes or hyperlipidaemia( high blood fats levels). More rarely, there might be a genetic or constitutional predisposition as with microaneurysms- but this is very unusual. Athletes or body builders are unlikely to fall into the above risk groups --
