Subject: Why does bracken grow best in the middle of a wood

Last week I walked in a local wood and noticed that the bracken was
growing taller with more branches in the middle of the wood where it was
darker but the bracken on the edge of the wood was not so tall. I do not
understand this as I thought plants grew better in light conditions.
