Treacle is indeed a British derivation of the word for molasses or 
refiners syrup.  This type of molasses is normally derived from the sugar 
processes of a sugar refinery.  Sugar refineries are where the raw sugar 
comes into to be processed or refined into what we are used to seeing: 
white sugar.
