The ability to put genes from different species into your selected species
makes possible the creation organisms that have not survived evolution or
never existed before. This makes possible the creation of commercially
valuable organisms, plants or animals of all types.
The rest of this response can be found from Monsanto and other Genetic
Engineering Companies.
That said, I wonder if we have the wisdom to appropriately use the new
skill of creating these new organisms. The precautionary principle is
important in this regard and there are numerous examples of how we have
created SERIOUS problems in the recent past by not acting cautiously.
Something that needs to be seriously considered is If we can do it, SHOULD
we do it? The release of new organisms has worse potential for the earth
than the atomic bomb.
