how can a person become a scientist?or how do you know you are?
A scientist is someone who does science (see this answer). Anyone who is curious about nature and willing to take the time and effort to ask nature good questions can do science; I recommend to you the "Amateur Scientist" columns in Scientific American. Several areas of science still have room for significant contributions by amateurs -- notably paleontology and astronomy, but the list also includes biology, mathematics and computer science. High-energy physics or molecular biology are a little more expensive... Becoming a professional scientist is something else again, involving a rather difficult course of study and years of education. But most scientists consider that fun, because scientists are typically people who love to learn.
