Dear Samantha:

I am afraid I cannot give you a definitive answer to your question about what color a giraffe's tongue is. I had always thought of them as black, but I decided to do a web search to corroborate that idea. This is what I found: Western Plains Zoo describes the 17" long prehensile tongue as black. The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo on the other hand, calls the giraffe's tongue, designed to pull acacia leaves off of acacia trees, purplish-black. Two other sites, Hannover Zoo and National Zoo describe the thickly mucus-coated tongue as blue.

For a picture where the giraffe's tongue looks purple. For a picture where the giraffe's tongue looks black.

Hope this helps!
