I spoke with geology department staff at Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, 
Ontario (www.lakeheadu.ca).  They said that the hills about which you 
asked are mesas with a basalt capstone protecting a shale base.  All the 
other hills in the area are just "normal" eroded gramite.
