It's better for two reasons: 1. It matches up better with the decimal numbering system we use: you don't have to do complicated calculations to realize that 1.07 km is 1070 meters, but try converting 0.75 miles into feet or yards in your head! 2. Essentially everyone else in the world uses it. If the United States weren't such an economic 500-pound gorilla, we'd *have* to use the S.I. system. Even so, running on a different system than the rest of the world creates problems for manufacturers who want to export to, say, Germany; for example, automobiles made for export may have to have parts describable with whole SI units, rather than the US system units we're familiar with.
